Professional background

Professor Stefano Fedele completed his degree (DMD, 1993-1998), post-graduate integrated academic/clinical training in oral medicine and PhD (1999-2005) at the University Federico II of Naples, Italy.

He moved to UCL/UCLH in 2006. He is professor of oral medicine at UCL Faculty of Medical Sciences, Eastman Dental Institute, and honorary consultant in oral medicine and facial pain at the UCLH Royal National ENT and Eastman Dental Hospitals.

He is head of the department of clinical research at UCL Eastman Dental Institute and director of the oral health and disease theme of the NIHR UCLH Biomedical Research Centre.

He is programme director of the MSc in oral medicine at UCL Eastman Dental Institute and supervisor of several PhD students.

Professor Fedele's clinical expertise includes the following orofacial disorders:

  • Chronic inflammatory disease of the oral mucosa (lichen planus, pemphigus, pemphigoid, GvHD)
  • Oro-facial granulomatosis (OFG)
  • Oral cancer and pre-cancer
  • Jaw bone disease
  • Hyposalivation (dry mouth, xerostomia) and non-neoplastic diseases of the salivary glands
  • Adverse effects of radiotherapy to the head and neck (e.g. fibrosis, dry mouth, osteoradionecrosis)
  • Adverse effects of cancer therapy (e.g. chemotherapy and immunotherapy)
  • Chronic facial pain

Research interests

Professor Fedele’s research activity is predominantly focused on clinical and translational research in oral medicine. He has been awarded research grants from several EU and UK funding bodies including FP6, FP7, NIHR Research for Patient Benefit, NIHR Invention for Innovation, Arthritis Research UK for a total of more than £7 million. He has been leading multicentre clinical studies in the field of:

  • Novel diagnostics for oral cancer and precancer
  • Novel therapeutics for a range of oral medicine disorders including dry mouth of radiotherapy, Sjogren’s syndrome, oral lichen planus, radiation fibrosis
  • Management of high risk oral epithelial dysplasia and oral cancer chemoprevention
  • Genetic variants associated with medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaws
