Making a correct diagnosis is pivotal in deciding the best treatment for a patient. Cancer is caused by genetic alterations in cells and we can use these genetic changes to diagnose tumours accurately. Research
I am a member of the 100,000 genomes sarcoma genomics clinical interpretation partnership and also have a specialist interest in digital pathology. My laboratory is currently using artificial intelligence techniques to integrate genetic information with pathological features in order to develop better ways to diagnose and treat patients with sarcoma.
I obtained a competitive intermediate clinical fellowship from Cancer Research UK to investigate the epi/genomics of undifferentiated sarcomas in order to develop a new molecular classification of the disease. The tangible clinical outputs for this project involved developing new diagnostic assays and identifying novel therapeutic options for patients based on identifying mutations in these tumours and DNA methylation signatures using techniques such as whole genome sequencing, RNA-sequencing and DNA methylome profiling on human tumour samples. At a basic science level, we use informatics and machine-learning approaches to integrate these datasets to address unanswered questions in this tumour type such as tissue of origin, differentiation and tumour evolution. This work is being conducted across three world class clinical and research facilities namely the RNOH, UCL Cancer Institute and the Francis Crick Institute.
In addition to my clinical and research responsibilities I am a faculty member of the Nottingham University Molecular Pathology node delivering lectures on molecular genetics of bone and soft tissue tumours to trainees and consultants.
