Enhanced supportive care is specialist care that aims to manage and minimise pain and other symptoms caused by cancer or cancer treatment.

These symptoms include sickness, tiredness or appetite changes. Because of its ‘holistic’ or ‘whole person’ approach, enhanced supportive care helps patients live as well as possible and supports families and carers.

We support people who have the following types of metastatic cancer (cancer which has spread to another part of the body):

  • Breast cancer
  • Colorectal cancer
  • Gynaecological cancer (including cervical, ovarian, womb, vulval and vaginal cancer)
  • Head and neck cancer
  • Lung cancer
  • Sarcoma
  • Upper gastrointestinal cancers (including oesophagus, stomach and pancreatic cancer, and, cholangiocarcinoma)
  • Urological cancers (including bladder, penile and prostate cancer)
  • Cancer of unknown primary

Our team consists of GPs, with a specialist interest in enhanced supportive care, and clinical nurse specialists (CNSs). We work closely with cancer doctors, nurses and other specialist services in the University College Hospital Macmillan Cancer Centre.

We will offer you a holistic initial assessment which will consider your physical, social, psychological and spiritual needs. We will then work closely with you to address these needs. This might involve prescribing you medicines, giving you practical advice, or talking through any worries you may have.

We can also help you to access other services, such as physiotherapy, psychological support, complementary therapies or specialist pain services.

We are available to see you in person when you attend the Cancer Centre for appointments, scans and treatments. And we can communicate by phone or email in between visits.

We may only see you or speak to you once, or we may support you for many months. This will depend on your individual needs.

Your hospital doctor or clinical nurse specialist can refer you. Or you can contact us directly (see contact details section).
