If your condition is not an emergency, there are alternative services that you can access across London and closer to home. For non-emergency problems (such as coughs, colds, sore throat, flu-like symptoms, diarrhoea and vomiting, ear aches and sprains) please consider other treatment options such as:

When it’s urgent but isn’t a life-threatening illness or injury, visit 111.nhs.uk or call 111 free from mobiles and landlines. NHS 111 call advisers are fully trained. They use a clinical assessment system that enables them to assess callers’ needs safely and effectively, and to direct them to the right NHS service. All advice provided is supported by experienced nurses.

For online health advice and access to a free ‘symptom checker’ mobile app, visit www.nhs.uk.

Visit your local pharmacist when you are suffering from a common health problem that does not require being seen by an emergency department nurse or doctor. Your pharmacist can give you confidential advice on illnesses and the medicines you need to treat them.

In each local area pharmacies generally open in the evening and at weekends on a rota basis – check your local paper for details. In addition, some pharmacies regularly operate late-night opening.

For more information about a pharmacist near you visit this website or click here for a list of Boots pharmacies that open until midnight.

GP practices continue to offer face-to-face, video and telephone appointments. All appointments are assessed to keep you safe and make sure people with the greatest need are seen first. Check your GP practice website for information on how best to contact them and to book an appointment. If you need to register with a GP, visit the NHS website.

Evening and weekend GP appointments are available seven days a week at GP hubs across North Central London’s five boroughs: Barnet, Camden, Enfield, Haringey and Islington. Our GP hubs are staffed by experienced GPs and nurses and offer assessment and treatment for adults and children with minor injuries and illnesses.

To find out where the hubs are and how to book an appointment, visit the NHS North Central London Clinical Commissioning Group website.

Minor ailments and injuries can often be treated at home, by a combination of over-the-counter medicine and plenty of rest. Keep a first aid kit and a well-stocked medicine cabinet (always keep medicines out of the reach of children). A basic first aid kit should contain these items.

The NHS website contains information on how to treat a range of common conditions.

Walk-in Centres provide fast and convenient access to healthcare advice and treatment for minor illnesses and injury. No appointment or GP registration is necessary.

Click here to find details of urgent care centres in your local area. (Please note that some centres may currently be closed.)

As with physical health concerns, your local GP practice is the first place to go when you have concerns regarding your mental health. Your doctor is there to help you with your mental health as well as your physical health. They will assess your circumstances and offer appropriate advice or treatment, or recommend local support options.

If you need help for a mental health crisis or emergency, visit the NHS North Central London Clinical Commissioning Group website.
