Our radiotherapy department currently treats around 2,000 patients each year from across the UK. We provide treatment for common cancers as well as delivering more specialist treatment. We are proud to be:
• One of Europe’s largest sarcoma services.
- The third largest centre in the UK for head and neck cancer.
- One of two designated specialist multidisciplinary teams for the North and East London Network for gynaecological cancers.
- The largest UK paediatric and young adult centre for radiotherapy, with a close partnership with Great Ormond Street Hospital.
- The largest adult and teenage neuro-oncology service, including providing services for the south of England for stereotactic radiosurgery Link- to Child and TYA page
- Providing Stereotactic Ablative Radiotherapy (SABR) for a broad range of cancer indications.
- A national referral centre for targeted molecular radiotherapy taking referrals from across the UK for paediatrics, teenage and young adults and adults. This service is delivered in conjunction with the Institute of Nuclear Medicine.
- Delivering total body irradiation for haematological conditions.
- Delivering brachytherapy for a range of sites
- Accredited under ISO 9001:2015 for the way we manage our patients and the improvement in the services they receive.
- From 2021, one of only two NHS high energy proton beam therapy centres.
Radiotherapy services at UCLH are conducted in two locations:
Radiotherapy Department – University College Hospital
The main Radiotherapy department is located in the basement of University College Hospital. There are lifts or stairs to the department.
When you arrive at the department, you will need to check in at reception. The reception staff will ask you to take a seat in the waiting room. On the very first appointment you will meet a radiographer from your treatment team who will answer questions you may have. If you are not feeling well please let reception know.
The radiotherapy bookings team will contact you by telephone to confirm your first appointment in the Pre-treatment Department, where you will come so that your treatment can be planned.

Patients who meet strict medical criteria may request hospital transport to attend hospital.
Proton Beam Therapy Department – Grafton Way Building
The Proton Beam Therapy department is located in the basement of UCLH Grafton Way Building (located between the Macmillan Cancer Centre and University College Hospital buildings. There are lifts or stairs to the department.
When you arrive within the building through the main entrance you will need to take the lifts or stairs to the B3 level and to check in at reception. The reception staff will ask you to take a seat in the relevant waiting room.
On the very first appointment you will meet a radiographer from your treatment team who will answer questions you may have. If you are not feeling well please let reception know.
Our bookings team will contact you by telephone to confirm your first appointments and arrangements with us, so you know where you will come so that you can meet your clinical team and your treatment can be planned.
