Introduced in July 2020, the Virtual Arthroplasty Clinic Service at University College Hospital (UCH) offers high quality, safe and effective follow up care to patients after hip and/or knee replacement surgery.
We provide a consultant-led, multidisciplinary service for patients referred from the UCH Orthopaedics Department.

Tertiary referrals
At present the service only accepts internal referrals, for patients who have undergone hip or knee replacement surgery at UCLH.

During the 2018/2019 business year, there were 10,401 outpatient attendances in hip and knee arthroplasty clinics at UCH. 8936 (approx. 86%) were face-to-face follow up attendances
Patients accessing this service are supported by a specialist Arthroplasty Practitioners (including an orthopaedic clinical specialist physiotherapist & a clinical nurse specialist), and Orthopaedic Administrative support.
Patient aftercare is dependent on the individual progress and recovery of the patient after joint replacement surgery. Some patients will be suitable to be managed in the community setting with support from their GP or local services. Some will require hospital visits and some will be discharged after a telephone consultation with the virtual arthroplasty clinic team and provision of basic self-management advice.
