The vocational rehabilitation service covers London and surrounding areas, though may accept referrals from further afield. It is an outpatient service that provides specialist assessment, support and advice to people with neurological conditions including progressive conditions (such as Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease) and single incident conditions (such as brain tumours, strokes). The team is comprised of a consultant neurologist, neuropsychologist and occupational therapists.
When someone has physical changes in their brain, their thinking (cognitive abilities), emotions, behaviour and physical skills can also change. We aim to support people with these changes to return to their employment or studies. At your first appointment, we usually ask about the kinds of problems you are having now and how you are feeling and coping. We can then think with you about your job, your employer and how these difficulties impact on your work.
We will then make a plan with you which may include completing standardised cognitive assessments, support around disclosure of a diagnosis, liaison with employers, work preparation rehabilitation, recommending reasonable adjustments under the Equality Act, providing emotional adjustment support that relates to the workplace or considering medical retirement. Please note, the service is confidential and no contact will be made with your employer without your consent.
We might also link up with other teams that are supporting you or refer you to other healthcare professionals, such as our Queen’s Square neuropsychology department, upper limb team, outpatient speech and language service or a community service.
Referrals are usually made via GPs or your consultant. Our referral criteria and referral pathway is below.
- Confirmed neurological diagnosis
- Aged 16+
- Currently in paid employment, on sick leave, self-employed or in higher education
- Should be ready to return to work within six months
- Has a local team where can access vocational rehabilitation

- Primary difficulty does not relate to your neurological condition
