Our department consists of a multidisciplinary team of consultants, specialist registrars, associate specialists, clinical nurse specialists, dieticians and podiatrists. We work together closely to support and improve the health of people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes via education, training, research and through other services that we provide. Our team works in close collaboration with ophthalmologists, vascular surgeons, endocrine surgeons, obstetricians and paediatricians. In addition to a large outpatient service, the department also provides a daily consultation service for inpatients with diabetes.
The diabetes team at UCLH are also working in partnership with Camden and Islington Clinical Care Groups, GPs and the Royal Free diabetes team to support the care of patients with diabetes in the community.

Urgent referrals can be triaged and seen within 2 working days by contacting the Endocrine Registrar via UCLH swiitchboard.
Access to patient results
Blood test results are attached to the clinic letter to the GP following outpatient consultation. Patients receive copies of their clinic letters.
Tertiary referrals
As one of the largest insulin pump centres we receive secondary and tertiary referrals from all over the UK.

We provide DAFNE education for people with type 1 diabetes. DESMOND courses for type 2 diabetes are provided by the community teams. We care for patients with:
- Newly diagnosed type 1 and type 2 diabetes
- Continuous glucose monitoring
- Foot problems
- Insulin pumps
- Preconception – planning for pregnancy
- Diabetes in pregnancy – pre-existing or gestational
- Lipid clinics
The diabetes clinics are held in Clinic K. On arrival to clinic, we will first check your blood pressure and weight. After this you can have your blood test. The results of the HbA1c will be analysed at that time and the result will be back for you to discuss during your clinic appointment.
