Professional background
Professor Lunn is professor of clinical neurology, consultant neurologist and is also clinical lead in neuroimmunology at Queen Square. He sees patients with all types of neurological disease, but his practice is increasingly focused on peripheral nerve disease, especially inflammatory peripheral nerve diseases and diseases of the nervous system associated with haematological problems.
His particular clinical and research interests are the neuropathies, of all sorts, but particularly those cause by the immune system and malignancies. However any disorders of the neuromuscular system are always of interest as is general neurology. His outpatient practice as part of the peripheral nerve service in the MRC Centre for Neuromuscular Disease at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery covers all inflammatory neuropathies, including clinics run jointly with haematology and with multidisciplinary support from neurophysiologists and nurse specialists.
With Dr Shirley D'Sa at UCLH, he runs the only specialised POEMS service in the UK. A limited number of appointments are open to NHS e-Referral Service (formally Choose and Book referrals) for patients with peripheral nerve disease.
He runs the neuroimmunology and CSF Laboratory (NICL) which performs specialist CSF, serum, plasma and other body fluid tests for a range of neurological diseases. Antibodies, biomarkers and cellular indicators of disease are all part of the NICL repertoire, which retains its ISO15189 UKAS accreditation.
Research interests
Professor Lunn's specialist clinical and research interests are in the inflammatory neuropathies, particularly Guillain-Barré syndrome, CIDP and paraproteinaemic neuropathies.
