Cecilia Bottomley studied at Cambridge University, qualifying in 1994. She specialised in obstetrics and gynaecology, undertaking postgraduate training at Guys and St Thomas’, St George’s and Kings College Hospitals amongst other places before becoming a consultant in 2009.

She developed her skills through a research MD focussing on ultrasound scan and the prediction of pregnancy loss. She has subsequently supervised research theses in relation to other early pregnancy conditions. She has authored and coauthored over 40 academic publications and she maintains an active research interest across the field of gynaecology and ultrasound. She has published two undergraduate textbooks.

Cecilia is a medical advisor for the Ectopic Pregnancy Trust and was previously scientific chair for the Association or Early Pregnancy Units. She gives regular invited lectures on gynaecology for the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and other national and international organisations.

She joined UCLH as a consultant in 2018, where she works as part of the gynaecology outpatient diagnostic and treatment unit team as well as undertaking gynaecological surgery and emergency gynaecological care. She is the current clinical lead for gynaecology governance. Prior to which she was a consultant at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital for 9 years where she was in charge of postgraduate training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and also lead for the Early Pregnancy Unit.
