Professor Sooriakumaran, MA(Oxon) BMedSci(Hons) BMBS(Hons) PGCertMedLaw ADCertClinInv(Cornell) FRCS(Urol) FEBU USMLE PhD, is a consultant urological surgeon specialising in robotic surgery for prostate cancer at UCLH. He is also a Professor of Urology at the University of Oxford and at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine, Visiting Professor of Urology, Senior Clinical Research Fellow,, Member of the Faculty of Clinical Medicine, and Member of the Congregation (sovereign body) at the University of Oxford, and Visiting Professor of Urology and Robotic Surgery at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences Jodhpur.

PS moved to UCLH in 2017 from Oxford University having worked at The Churchill as a high volume prostate cancer surgeon. He trained as a fellow for two years at Cornell University in New York and the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, before his direct appointment to Oxford by the Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences. PS is known internationally for his pioneering work in robotic surgery, especially with regards graded nerve sparing and Retzius sparing, fields in which he has published extensively. PS is a National Clinical Excellence Award holder, a Health Services Journal Cancer Judge, and sits on the research panel of The Urology Foundation. PS has recently been awarded a National Clinical Impact Award for his impactful work in prostate cancer and robotic surgery. He is also a committee member of the UK National Cancer Research Institute Advanced Prostate Clinical Studies Group due to his work in surgery for metastatic prostate cancer. This expertise has also facilitated his appointment to the trial management group of the STAMPEDE trial, the world’s largest interventional trial in advanced prostate cancer. PS is a former member of the European Association of Urology (EAU) young academic group in prostate cancer and the EUA robotic urology section scientific working party, and maintains his collaborations with urology leaders across the world.

Research interests

PS has made contributions to prostate cancer care internationally. His research interests centre around improving patient care by improving robotic prostatectomy techniques, and include pioneering work in Retzius-sparing prostatectomy, graded nerve-sparing prostatectomy, salvage robotic prostatectomy, imaging-guided pelvic lymph node dissection during robotic prostatectomy, metastatic robotic prostatectomy and many others.
