Professional background
Professor Asif Muneer is a consultant urological surgeon and andrologist and clinical lead for urology at UCLH. He specialises in all areas of andrology including genital oncology (penile and testis cancer) male infertility and vasectomy reversal, erectile dysfunction and penile prosthesis surgery. He also manages men with hypogonadism, testicular conditions and corrective surgery for Peyronie's disease.
Professor Muneer is also Honorary Professor of Urology and Surgical Andrology at University College London (UCL) and is past Honorary Secretary for the British Association of Urological Surgeons and past President of the British Society for Sexual Medicine. He completed his higher degree (MD) at UCL investigating the physiology of smooth muscle dysfunction. Having completed his higher surgical training in Oxford, he undertook further visiting fellowships to the University of Bern and University of Paris as well as completing a senior fellowship at University College London Hospital. He has received a number of national awards including a British Urological Foundation award, Ethicon visiting fellowship, Ralph Shackman fellowship to MD Anderson Cancer Centre and a Royal Society of Medicine award. He was also awarded the Keith Yeates Gold Medal for the FRCS (Urol) intercollegiate examination and the Harold Hopkins Golden Telescope from the British Association of Urological Surgeons.
As well as lecturing to trainee surgeons, Professor Muneer lectures throughout the UK and internationally.
Clinical interests include penile prosthesis surgery for erectile dysfunction including revision surgery, male infertility, penile and testicular cancer and inguinoscrotal sarcoma.
Research interests
Professor Muneer has research interests in genital oncology and benign andrology and he leads the UCL Male Genital Cancer Centre, He is chief investigator for the multicentre NIHR-funded VELRAD penile cancer trial.
He has also published widely on all aspects of andrology including priapism and erectile dysfunction treatment options.
