Mr Arjun Shankar

Mr Arjun Shankar trained at university college hospital medical school qualifying in 1990. He then undertook his postgraduate surgical training in North East Thames with a secondment to the Hammersmith Hospital hepatobiliary unit. He was appointed as a consultant general surgeon at UCLH NHS Trust in 2003 with a particular interest in Pancreaticobiliary disease. He has developed a particular expertise in the management of benign pancreaticobiliary disease which includes chronic and acute pancreatitis, bile duct disease, complex gallstones and duodenal polyps. He now performs all his complex HPB surgery at the Royal Free Hospital as part of the NCL HPB service.

He has established UCH as a leading centre for the treatment of abdominal sarcomas with audited World Class outcomes. Arjun leads a multidisciplinary group of subspecialist surgeons who operate on patients with abdominal sarcomas as part of the London Sarcoma Unit.

Since 2003 he has developed a hernia unit between the Royal Free and University College Hospitals managing some of the most complex hernia cases from around the country, many of whom require input from the plastic surgical team. Between himself and Mr David Floyd (consultant Plastic surgeon at The Royal Free Hospital) they have set up The Abdominal Wall unit which offers state of the art MDT care for patients with complex incisional hernias.
Arjun was Divisional Clinical Director of GI Services at UCLH until the move of HPB surgery in 2010.
