Professional background
Annakan Navaratnam is a consultant ear, nose and throat (ENT) surgeon with a sub-speciality interest in rhinology and facial plastic surgery. He manages all aspects of diseases related to the nose and sinuses. He is also part of the craniofacial team at UCLH where he works in multidisciplinary environment treating a broad range of facial, nasal and eye related disorders.
He trained at Imperial College School of Medicine and completed higher surgical training in the North Thames Deanery (London). He completed the Royal College of Surgeons post CCT Rhinology and Facial Plastic Surgery fellowship at Charing Cross Hospital, London. He has previously been appointed as a National Medical Director’s Clinical Fellow at NHS England during the COVID-19 pandemic. During this time, he led national projects aimed at improving the medical treatment of patients with COVID-19 in hospitals which gained national recognition.
He has written six NHS England national clinical guidelines, authored over 70 papers in peer reviewed journals and has been awarded 13 prizes for his clinical and academic endeavours He frequently teaches on local and national instructional ENT courses and is an invited speaker at international conferences. Annakan is actively involved in training the next generation of surgeons. He regularly volunteers to give talks to schoolchildren about medicine as a career. He mentors medical students and junior doctors as well as being a clinical supervisor for higher surgical trainees in ENT.
He is a member of ENT UK, BRS (British Rhinology Society) and BSFPS (British Association of Facial Plastic surgeons).
