Professional background
I qualified from The London Hospital Medical College in 1988, obtaining the fellowship of The Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1992. I undertook a period of research into gastrointestinal function and motility at The London hospital and obtained a Master of Surgery degree in 1996. I undertook my surgical training in North East Thames and was appointed to Consultant Surgeon post in Southend Hospital in 2000. Prior to taking up my consultant post in Southend Hospital, I spent 3 months in Japan and Australia, improving my experience in laparoscopic gastrointestinal surgery and therapeutic endoscopy.
In 2003, I moved to a consultant post at The Royal London Hospital, Barts Health Trust, where I am the Clinical Lead for Upper GI Surgery and Clinical Director for Surgery. In 2016 Oesophagogastric cancer surgery was centralised to UCLH and I was awarded an Honorary Consultant Upper GI Surgeon appointment to undertake Oesophagogastric cancer surgery at the designated Cancer Centre.
