Professional background
Dr Manji qualified from Trinity Hall Cambridge and Middlesex Hospital in 1982.
After training as a GP in Edinburgh, he returned to medicine, receiving his training in neurology at the National Hospital For Neurology and Neurosurgery and L’Hopital Kremlin – Bicetre, Paris. He was appointed consultant neurologist to the National Hospital, Queen Square and Ipswich Hospitals in 1997.
He is now one of the senior neurologists at Queen Square with interests in general neurology (including headache and dizziness), peripheral nerve disorders and also neuro-infections which include HIV and now COVID-19.
He was president of the neurosciences section of the Royal Society of Medicine in 2019/2020. He was appointed associate professor at University College, London in 2021.
In 2022, he was awarded the Association of British Neurologists medal for services to national and international neurology.
He is keen on teaching neurology, spending time in Kenya, India, Mozambique, Nigeria, Barbados as visiting professor. He has mentored a number of promising young doctors from these countries at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery.
