Professional background
Douglas attained his medical degree from the University of Glasgow and is a member of the Royal College of Physicians as well as a fellow of the Royal College of Anaesthetists. His training in anaesthesia was primarily in London with some time spent in Scotland. He also undertook a separate two-year fellowship in Perioperative Medicine at University College London Hospitals, focussing on the pre-operative and post-operative care of the high-risk surgical patient.
He has a long-standing interest in issues surrounding end of life care and achieved a separate degree at University College London during his undergraduate studies, focussing on the philosophy of medicine and how this interacts with society. In 2021, he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy from University College London for his thesis 'Views and Practices of Anaesthetists Towards End-of-Life Decisions and Advance Care Planning'. He has published his findings in high impact journals such as the British Journal of Anaesthesia and was recently a report co-author of the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine’s best practice guideline 'Care at the End of Life'.
