Two clinicians with close links to UCLH and UCL have been appointed to be National Clinical Directors (NCD) by NHS England (NHSE) for 2024.
Professor Ramani Moonesinghe, who is professor of peri-operative medicine at UCL and honorary consultant in anaesthesia and perioperative medicine at UCLH, will continue as NCD for critical and perioperative care.
Professor Donald Peebles, who has been a professor of maternal fetal medicine at UCL since 2008 and was divisional clinical director for women’s health at UCLH from 2014 to 2020, is the new NCD for maternity.
The National Clinical Directors are practicing clinicians from across England who work part-time at NHS England, providing clinical leadership, advice, input and support across distinct areas of NHS conditions and services ranging from cancer and cardiovascular disease to urgent and emergency care and major trauma in line with the NHS Long Term Plan.
UCLH chief executive David Probert said: “I’m delighted to see Professor Moonesinghe and Professor Peebles confirmed in the new announcement of NHSE Clinical Directors. Having leaders of such credibility, experience, values, and focus in these positions is so important. Their considerable experience and expertise will be invaluable to the NHS as it continues to adapt to meet the challenges and opportunities of healthcare in the future.
"Congratulations to them and to all the other NCDs, both newly appointed and those who remain in post.”
Professor Moonesinghe said: “I was delighted to be reappointed and am also looking forward to working with Professor Peebles more closely in his role. I think our success reflects the support that the UCLH and UCL gave us for professional development and the fantastic culture within both organisations.
"I am very grateful to the UCLH team for the support that they have given me over the years."
