UCLH lung cancer specialist Professor Siow Ming Lee has been awarded the British Thoracic Oncology Group’s (BTOG) Lifetime Achievement Award for 2023.
The prestigious prize recognizes Professor Lee’s groundbreaking work over more than two decades in designing and leading several randomised clinical studies in lung cancer that have changed clinical practice and improved treatment outcomes for lung cancer patients.
“I am honoured and humbled to receive this award,” said Professor Lee at a ceremony and conference in Belfast attended by over 1,000 people. "I want to thank everyone at BTOG for this recognition."
What made the award even more special was the fact that Professor Lee had no idea it was coming, and his family was secretly invited to the ceremony to see him receive the award. "I was completely surprised, and it made it even more special after they turned up after I received the Award," he said.
The BTOG is a multi-disciplinary group of healthcare professionals involved in thoracic malignancies. Its mission is to promote research, develop training programs for healthcare professionals, and highlights the needs of patients.
The Lifetime Achievement Award is awarded by the BTOG Scientific Committee, which includes medical oncologists, clinical oncologists, chest physicians, thoracic surgeons, pathologist, statistician, radiologist, palliative medicine specialist, lung CNS, and patient advocates.
Professor Lee's work has had a significant impact on lung cancer practice and treatment. His research has led to new treatments and improved outcome for patients. "I hope my work will inspire more young doctors and researchers to get involved in lung cancer research," he said.
The BTOG Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes Professor Lee's tremendous contributions to lung cancer treatment and research, and his unwavering dedication to improving the lives of lung cancer patients.
