UCLH nurse Betsey Lau-Robinson has been awarded an MBE for her safeguarding work with adult patients at UCLH as well as her work on the Mental Capacity Act. Betsey has dedicated her career to advocating for the safety of patients and their human rights.
With the Law Commission, she used her expert knowledge to present to the Committee for Human Rights at the Houses of Parliament to amend the Mental Capacity Act. This resulted in the Act receiving Royal Assent by the Queen in 2019. She is currently Head of Safeguarding Adults and the Mental Capacity Act at UCLH.
Betsey said: “I am deeply humbled and honoured to receive this special award. My work would not be possible without the support of a huge team of professionals, all working tirelessly together for one cause: to advocate for, and safeguard, patient safety and human rights.
“It was an enormous privilege to be part of the team to present proposed amendments to the Mental Capacity Act. We really hope the new Act makes a big difference to people who may lack capacity, such as Learning Disabilities, Autism or brain disorder.”
Betsey’s recognition in the King’s New Year Honours 2023 list was welcomed by UCLH chief executive David Probert who said:
“I am delighted Betsey has been honoured in this way. This is a recognition of her lifelong dedication in advocating for patient safety and we are all very proud of her at UCLH.
“The New Year is an opportunity to say a huge thanks to all our staff who have worked so hard and achieved so much throughout the year."
